In this article we will be learning basics of HTML.

HTML stands for Hypertext Markup Language. HTML code is the major language of the Internet's World Wide Web. HTML is a set of logical codes (markup) in parentheses that constitute the appearance of a web document and the information it contains.

  • HTML is a purely markup language.
  • When writing HTML, you add "tags" to the text in order to create the structure.
  • HTML is not case sensitive, you can use free style of writing.

There are two types of tags in HTML:
  • Empty Tags
  • Container Tags

Empty Tags are those which don't require opening and closing e.g: <br> <Hr>

Container Tags need to be opened and closed e.g:

<body>      Opening tag
</body>     Closing tag

The HTML code looks like this:

<html>
<
head>
    <title>
My first HTML Program</title>
</
head>
<
body>
My first HTML Program code lines.

</body>
</
html>

The html file can have .htm or .html extension. This file can be opened in any browser. HTML is written in plain text. That means you don't need any specific software programs like a word processor to create your HTML files. All you need is a simple text-editor that's already on your system. For MACs, that would be SimpleText and for Windows, Notepad.

Note: Some tags work on particular browser. So you should check your code in different browsers.

Elements

The words/letters between these two angle brackets are called elements. These are the coded commands within HTML. Elements tell the browser how to display the web page.

For example:
<head> tells the browser to start a heading ; </head> tells the browser to close the heading.

What you require to learn HTML
  • Any text editor
  • Any Browser
  • You can use other HTML editors like FrontPage, Dreamweaver etc. There are lot of software available to write HTML codes.

Basic Tags in HTML

<html>, <head> and <body> tag in every HTML file. But there is not such definite rule for it. These all are container tags so, they should have an opening and closing.

<html>...</html>

Every HTML document begins and ends with the <html> tag. This tells the browser that the following document is an html file.

<
head>...</head>

The <head> tag contains the title of the document along with general information about the file, like the author, copyright, keywords and/or a description of what appears on the page.

<
title>...</title>

Appears within the <head> tag and gives the title of the page. Try to make your titles descriptive, but not more than 20 words in length. The title appears at the very top of the browser page on the title bar. Title is also helpful in search optimization. So you should be careful while selecting titles.

<
body>...</body>

The main content of your page is placed within the body tags: your text, images, tables, links, tables and so on.

Learning HTML is quick and simple. So get started!
