Forms add the ability to web pages to not only provide the person viewing the document with dynamic information but also to obtain information from the person viewing it, and process that information.

A form is an area that can contain form elements. Form elements are elements that allow the user to enter information (like text fields, textarea fields, drop-down menus, radio buttons, checkboxes, etc.) in a form.

To insert a form we use the <form>...</form>
tags. The rest of the form elements must be inserted in between the form tags.

NOTE: The FORM element has no formatting attributes.

A simple form will look like this:

<html>

     <head>
            <title>Forms in HTML</title>
     </head>
        <body>

<
form name="input" action="MyForm.asp" method="get">
Username:

<
input type="text" name="user" />
<
input type="submit" value="Submit" />
</
form>
      </body>

</
html>
In the above form

ACTION: The form's action attribute defines the name of the file to send the content to. The file defined in the action attribute usually does something with the received input.

METHOD: GET (default) or POST specifies which HTTP method will be used to send the form's contents to the web server.

Forms have following fields:

Form elements have properties: Text boxes, Password boxes, Checkboxes, Option (Radio) buttons, Submit, Reset, File, Hidden and Image. The properties are specified in the TYPE Attribute of the HTML element <INPUT> </INPUT>.

<
input type="text" name="textbox1" size="20" value="enter name"></p>
Please Enter your address:

<
input type="text" name="textbox1" size="20" value="mailing address"></p>
</form>
      </body>

</
html>

Password

Used accept text which will be password and will not be showing text while entering. Used to allow entry of passwords.

<INPUT TYPE="PASSWORD">
Password boxes use the following attributes:

TYPE: password

SIZE: determines the size of the textbox in characters.

MAXSIZE: determines the maximum size of the password in characters.

NAME: The name of an input element

VALUE: is usually blank.

HTML code for PASSWORD:

<
html>
     <head>

        <body>

<
form name="input" action="html_form_submit.asp" method="get">

</

      </body>

</

<INPUT TYPE="HIDDEN">

Hidden inputs have the following attributes:

form name="input" action="html_form_submit.asp" method="get">
<input type="hidden" name="textboxhidden" size="20" value="secretvaluebeingpassed"></p>

<b>Select your sex orientation:</b><br>

<
input type="radio" name="sexe" value="female"/> Female
<
input type="radio" name="sex" value="none"/> None
</

      </body>

</
html>

You can use all the form fields in a single html webpage. The code for the same is given below.

     <head>

     </head>
        <body>

<
input type="radio" name="sexe" value="female"/> Female
<

</form>
      </body>

</
html>

You can simply copy paste the code in the notepad and save as with some name and extension as "html" or "htm" and see the effect on your browser. Hope the article would have helped you making a grasp on html coding. I will be explaining more about HTML forms in my next article. So be inline.
