HTML 5 introduced an element HTML 5 Video for the purpose of playing videos or movies, partially replacing the object element. Prior to HTML5, there was no standards based way to embed video in a web page.

Virtually all the video you have ever watched on the web has been funneled through a third-party plugin, it maybe Flash, QuickTime, or RealPlayer. HTML5 defines a standard way to embed video in a web page which is still evolving.

HTML5 Video Formats

Currently, there are 2 supported video formats for the video element:

  1. Ogg =  Ogg files with Thedora video codec and Vorbis audio codec.
  2. MPEG4 = MPEG 4 files with H.264 video codec and AAC audio codec.
To show a video in HTML5, you need to add control attribute for adding play, pause, volume controls and you can also include the width and height attributes.

The Ogg file format will work in Firefox, Opera and Chrome. If you want to show video in Safari, the video file must be of type MPEG4. The video element allows multiple source elements which can link to different video files. Lets see an example how video element does work in HTML5.

HTML5 Code

<
html>
<
head>
<
meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=windows-1252">
<title>New Page 1</title>
</head>
<
body>
<
video width="320" height="240" controls="controls">
  <source src="movie.ogg" type="video/ogg" />
  <source src="movie.mp4" type="video/mp4" />
Your browser does not support the video tag.
</video>
</body>
</
html>

Output Window

Internet Explorer 8 does not support the video element. In IE 9, there will be support for video element using MPEG4.
